"Cheated by life, lonely and alone, is this Christy's last chance for love? Loss and disappointment are the hallmarks of Christy Doyle's life. In 1970's Buffalo, the world is in turmoil, but Christy is shackled by the demands of a community that rejects change. After the death of her beloved mother, Christy feels suffocated by her father's selfish demands. Her thirties are fast approaching and she fears that she will never escape her routine job and bleak future. When a friendship becomes a romance, Christy wonders if she has to sacrifice her dreams to find love. What others say about "Loving Christy" "Christy's world went dark. She drops out of college, her mother dies, her relationship with her father is strained, and the men in her life disappear. Feeling desperate, Christy heads to the bar to forget. Enter Dennis, her savior. A touching and moving story, Loving Christy, is a winner." ~ L. C. Hayden - Award winning author of the Harry Bronson mystery series and #1 Angels Best Seller for Angels Around Us "Loving Christy is the story of second chances and of redemption through love and personal growth. It is a quick, light read with some very satisfying moments as Christy Doyle evolves from a rudderless self-centered girl into a caring woman whose journey ultimately has a positive effect on those who never lost faith in her." ~ Judy Johnston, freelance writer/editor "Loving Christy is set in the Irish-American community of Buffalo, New York, in the 1970's. The story highlights the challenges facing Christy, a young woman who struggles with the loss of her mother and the traditional role she is expected to follow. As the poignant tale unfolds, we learn that life isn't always fair, but there are many willing to help Christy find her way." ~ Marilyn Briant Rockmore, author of The Leopard and the Mouse "In Loving Christy, Kathy Joyce Glascott deftly captures the essence of her heroine who looks for love and, in the process, also finds herself. With unexpected twists, this first novel engages, but never overwhelms. The reader who wants a good story without getting caught in a mire of sentimentality or a maelstrom of violence will not be disappointed with this book." ~ Ophelia De Laine Gona (Author of Dawn of Desegregation J. A. De Laine and Briggs v. Elliott, University of South Carolina Press. 2011)"

I really enjoyed this book. The story takes place in Buffalo, New York in an Irish neighborhood, but that doesn't really matter as the story is one that I think all people can relate to. Who doesn't struggle at times with love, wondering about love, wanting to be loved? It's universal. It's definitely a worthwhile read.Product details

Loving Christy Kathy Joyce Glascott 9781935683360 Books Reviews
A well-written book by Kathy Glascott. The characters are realistic with their strengths and weaknesses; their wants and needs. Christy has a long history of negativity in her life and feels hopeless about her future. Dennis has had his own emotional and family issues. Neither of them is looking for love or the heartbreak that might come with it, but fate has other plans. Truth and trust must be built before they learn how to love again.
A good coming of age novel about growing up in a city and dealing with the opinion of neighbors of different generations. Christy learns that she is a strong woman and rises above her limited background.
Amazing story and very well written. I am born and raised in Buffalo, New York where the story is set. I can picture and feel all the places mentioned. I feel for Christy and Dennis is her rock. Loved the book!
Loving Christy is set in blue collar Buffalo in 1974, a time when "know your place" was giving way to "make your place". The story takes you through the soul searching, second guessing, and new awakenings of Christy's search for happiness. This is a believable story, populated by characters you will like or not, in situations of their own making or by circumstance. It is a good reflection of the time and place, and of someone trying to make her life better and different than before. All in all, a good read. Enjoy!
I could easily picture O'Malleys bar and the time warp back to the 70's was well executed. I hope Kathy continues to enrich her future writings with even more descriptive prose to further enrich characters and their actions. I would have given 5 stars to the book if Kathy had revealed a bit more detail in the cause (more examples and impact on the psyche) that caused Christy's hesitation to commit herself to love... it would have enriched the story line.
The title caught my eye Loving Christy. Is the story about Christy or the people who are loving her? As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that Christy is in need of loving. She has been the caretaker of her mother for a long time. She gives up her dreams to take care of her. After her mom passes away she ends up watching over her Dad. She has buried herself in the act of taking care of others. This is a common tale for many women. Glascott does a good job of letting the story tell itself. The reader gets caught up in the character of Christy. We want her to shed her fears and grab her chance at life. The journey Christy takes is not a straight forward one. This choice of Glascott is a good one. It allows the reader to grow with the main character. I recommend this story for anyone who likes character driven stories. I look forward to the next story this author has to tell.
I wondered why the title "Loving Christy," rather than "Christy," and concluded that this is a story of how differently people in Christy's life love her, including how Christy "loves" herself. There is conflict between Christy, her father, and others as she initially allows their expectations for her to determine the course of her life. For me, the most touching and powerful scene occurs when Christy seeks a lover in a bar, only to have him plainly tell her that all he wants is some time in the bar to talk with her, nothing more. Mrs. Glascott has "nailed" Christy's loneliness and embarrassment in this scene. Set in the 60's and 70's, Christy's story is reminiscent of the conflicts women of this era experienced. Christy's life journey is a meaningful read, one that is relevant to every woman.
I really enjoyed this book. The story takes place in Buffalo, New York in an Irish neighborhood, but that doesn't really matter as the story is one that I think all people can relate to.
